Refuge office is on County Road X61 about 5 miles outside of Wapello, IA. There are multiple access points. Directions, maps and a refuge brochure can be downloaded by clicking on the brochure link below.
Site Amenities and Recreation Opportunities:
Visitor information available at office Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Hiking trails, water trail, fishing, hunting, three boat ramps, wildlife observation and photography. Two observation decks with scopes are available.
Office is open Monday-Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Refuge is open sunrise to sunset daily. However, there are some closed areas in the fall from September 15 until January 1.
Special Closings and Special Events:
May 21 event called "Go Wild, Go Birding, Go Hiking, 7 a.m. to noon. Some parts of the refuge are closed in the fall as it is a waterfowl sanctuary from September 15 to January 1.
Natural Site Characteristics:
Mississippi River and Iowa River wildlife habitat and natural area. Waterfowl, warblers and other songbirds, wading birds, turtles and frogs, deer, eagles.
Programming and infrastructure needs:
A new office and visitor contact facility is planned for 2012, trail improvements are needed.
